River Organic Carbon Fluxes Modulated by Hydrodynamic Sorting of Particulate Organic Matter

چکیده
Rivers regulate the global carbon cycle by transferring particulate organic (POC) from terrestrial landscapes to marine sedimentary basins, but processes controlling amount and composition of fluvially exported POC are poorly understood. We propose that hydrodynamic sorting modify fluxes during fluvial transit. test this hypothesis studying transported along a ∼1,200 km reach Rio Bermejo, Argentina. Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry revealed was either fine, mineral-associated matter, or coarse discrete particles. Mineral-associated is more resistant oxidation has lower particle settling velocity than POC. Consequently, hydraulic downstream fining amplify proportion ∼55% ∼78% over 1,220 This suggests greater probability export preservation in basins plant detritus, which may be oxidized CO2

Temperature Dependence of Photodegradation of Dissolved Organic Matter to Dissolved Inorganic Carbon and Particulate Organic Carbon
Photochemical transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been studied for more than two decades. Usually, laboratory or "in-situ" experiments are used to determine photodegradation variables. A common problem with these experiments is that the photodegradation experiments are done at higher than ambient temperature. Five laboratory experiments were done to determine the effect of temp...
متن کاملOrganic Carbon and Organic Matter Levels in Sediments of the Strait of Hormoz, the Persian Gulf
Total organic carbon has a major influence on both the chemical and biological processesthat take place in sediments. Algal bloom is one of the organic carbon levels in aquatic ecosystems. In 2009 algal bloom occurred in the Hormozgan province and prolonged for months, which finally setteled down in 2010. In this study the variations of total organic carbon (TOC), organic matter (TOM) and tot...
متن کاملCarbon, nitrogen, and carbohydrate fluxes during the production of particulate and dissolved organic matter by marine phytoplankton
Although the principal source of marine organic matter is phytoplankton, experimental data on carbon and nitrogen mass balance during their growth cycle are lacking. Phytoplankton from diverse taxonomic groups (Synechococcus bacillaris, Phaeocystis sp., Emiliania huxleyi, Skeletonema costatum) were grown in synthetic seawater media, and changes in particulate and dissolved carbon, nitrogen, and...
متن کاملBiological Formation of Organic Substances from Particulate Organic Matter
Biological degradation of terrestrially derived macromolecules including lignin and cellulose has been shown to produce a large number of environmentally relevant phenolic compounds. It has demonstrated that extracellular superoxide (O2 ) is produced by heterotrophic bacteria that are common in lakes, soil, hydrothermal vents, marine sediments, estuaries and oceans. Rates of superoxide producti...
